In search of glimmers...

Sep 14, 2026

A glimmer is a small moment, sensation or experience that gives your nervous system a sense of safety, connection, pleasure or calm. The term is associated with polyvagal-informed approaches to nervous-system regulation.

They don't have to be big, profound experiences. In fact, the power of glimmers is that they are tiny and often completely ordinary.

They might be incidental, like noticing the warmth of the sunshine, the green leaves on a tree, or the first buds of spring. Or more intentional, as we treat ourselves to;

  • Playing a song you love
  • Giving your partner a hug, or them giving you one
  • Baking a cake, or simply taking time out to enjoy a piece of cake
  • Buying or receiving fresh flowers
  • A wine with a friend
  • Taking a slow deep breathe
  • Taking a walk by the ocean and listening to the waves
  • A lovely evening practice could be ‘collecting your glimmers’, as you reflect on your day, recall the mini moments of joy and peace.
