5 foods to eat when emotionally drained

Sep 07, 2026

It hits at all at some stage, sometimes it’s monthly, sometimes weekly. In this accelerated life we all live, it’s completely natural that we have days or periods of feeling emotionally drained, spent.

So, how do we nurture this and support the return to feeling good again?

Here are some foods we love to eat that bring us joy, support us emotionally, our nervous system, and enhance our wellbeing.

5 foods I’d reach for:

  1. Eggs
A simple source of protein, B vitamins and choline. Try scrambled eggs with sourdough and avocado when you need something comforting but nourishing. Or bake them into a quiche with mushrooms, cheese, courgettes, to enjoy the pleasure of a delicious pastry tart.
  2. Oily fish
Wild caught salmon, sardines or trout provide omega-3 fats and protein. A simple salmon bowl with rice, greens and olive oil is a great emotionally-drained meal.
  3. Greek yoghurt + berries
Easy when you have little appetite. Add berries, walnuts and a drizzle of honey for protein, fibre, antioxidants and healthy fats.  If you want something warm and comforting, make our baked yoghurt and berry recipe.
  1. Avocado
Rich in monounsaturated fats and fibre and surprisingly satisfying. Have it on wholegrain toast with eggs, or some hummus.
  2. Dark chocolate + nuts
Enjoy some dark chocolate (70%+) with almonds or walnuts as a lovely afternoon option when you’re craving comfort. The nuts add protein and healthy fats so you’re less likely to experience an energy crash.

One thing I’d prioritise:

Don’t let yourself get too hungry. When you’re emotionally depleted, it’s very easy to skip meals and then reach for sugar or highly processed foods. Even a simple combination of protein + complex carbohydrate + healthy fat can make a noticeable difference to energy and mood.

For example: salmon + rice + avocado + greens is almost a perfect “I’m exhausted” meal.
